#DIARY

	Friday, July 1, 2022 We drove to Kalyves to join friends at the monthly coffee morning. However, Bill and I had a lot to discuss so we sat at a separate table. On returning home, I rode to Petros' Café for a chat with Chris and disabled Dimitris. Bill didn't show up. I assume that the weather was too hot for him.
	Chris and I ordered omelettes. He had plain and I had "ap'olla" (with everything).
	Saturday, July 2, 2022 Back at the Café at lunchtime. Two young men parked a car in front of my mobike and proceeded to install a very large "woofer" loudspeaker in the boot.
	A helicopter flew noisily over the Café.
Sunday, July 3, 2022 Billy phoned to say that he'd been kept awake all night by music from the nearby taverna so he was going to bed now and wouldn't be joining us at the Café at lunchtime. Iliana has a cold and diarrhoea so I rode to Georgioupoli on my mobike and had breakfast at Stelios Café Bar alone, apart from German tourists. I bought a cabbage then called on Tom & Angelika at "Sentouki" shop/café. Tom has just had a hernia operation so he was feeling sore.
	I rode home, sliced up the cabbage, pummelled it in salt water and put it in a jar in a dark cupboard. In a couple of weeks I should have sauerkraut. Then I rode to Litsarda for coffee with Chris and disabled Dimitris. (I think I'll call him "DD" from now on.)
On the way home my phone beeped so I stopped to read the message. Iliana wants me to buy 6 bottles of water. I stopped at the supermarket to oblige. __ Monday, July 4, 2022 American Independence Day Today feels slightly less hot at only 28°C with a cool, northerly breeze. Iliana is still sneezing and sniffling but she arose early to water the garden and she's pottering about. I've replaced the "cling film" on my Logitech K380 keyboard. It protects it from liquids and dirty fingers. I rode to Litsarda as usual for cofee with Billy, Chris and DD.
	Billy asked me to fix the detached front panel on his car so I collected my tools from home, rode to his house and fitted lengths of "Tserki" perforated steel strip with screws. New indicator lights have been on order for weeks.
Tuesday, July 5, 2022 I rode to Kalyves to buy more Sauerkraut. On the way back, I stopped at Takis' house for a chat. He had two friends with him and they were speaking rapidly with a local dialect so I understood very little. Back home, I checked that Iliana was OK then rode to Litsarda for coffee with the boys.
	Wednesday, July 6, 2022 Iliana was still snuffly but feeling better so we drove to Almyrida for breakfast at "Francoise" Café. I took a small bag of apricot pits for Mira, who is collecting them - presumably to eat the kernels. A young girl on a sailboard was being rescued by a motorboat.
	In the afternoon I did some research and answered emails and phone calls then took a nap. I ate leftovers for dinner then Iliana and I took a walk around the village. We found a new house being built and marvelled at the pluimbing. It looks as if they miscalculated the slope for a water pipe so half of it is raised up out of the channel.
	On the way home we met Helen who has a holiday home here. She is a professional event organiser and she told us that her next project is the ABBA tour. In the evening I watched "Almost Famous" starring Kate Hudson.
Thursday, July 7, 2022 HOT and not much wind. Looking forward to the thunderstorm, which is forecast for Saturday (a likely story!) We drove to Georgioupoli, where Iliana had her nails reinforced and painted and I had breakfast at Stelios Café Bar. Iliana joined me for a cup of tea. Afterwards we did shopping and called at "Sentouki" for apple pie and cream and for Iliana to buy a hat and some presents. Then to Vamos to collect two potted plants from our friends' house, which we will care for while the friends are in England. Back home just in time, I got onto my mobike and rode to Petros' Café to join Billy and Chris. The latter told us that he'd collected Alexis to paint his gates but the poor lad nearly collapsed from heat exhaustion and had to be taken home early. Because of the heat, we didn't stay long at the Café. __ Friday, July 8, 2022 Another scorcher today. I had to put the aircon on overnight. This morning, Iliana insisted on scrubbing the bathroom floor because she saw an ant. Now she's lying on the bed, exhausted. The cicada noise is deafening. After noon, I rode to Café Petros. Neither Billy nor Chris showed up so I chatted with DD and a couple of young Norwegian lads.
	Saturday, July 9, 2022 A thunderstorm is forecast. We drove to Kalyves and parked in the main car park to avoid battling through traffic to find street parking. It was only a short walk to the supermarket. We bought provisions and I returned to the car with them while Iliana walked to the ATM to get cash.
	I left the car park on the beach road and went to a Café bordering the beach. I sat at a free table but the adjacent blinds were down. and it was hot there. Shortly after Iliana arrived, a group of peaple left so we bagged their table and enjoyed a cooling sea breeze,
	I ordered fruit yoghurt and Iliana ordered a snack. We arrived home with a few minutes to spare so I checked the weather forecast before riding to Café O Petros to join Billy, Chris and DD. The forecast thunderstorm appeared to be drifting past the island some kilometers to the north but I took my raincoat just in case.
Sharon, the "pie lady" has been ill with autoimmune anaemia and vitamin B21 deficiency. (No, she's not an alcoholic.) However, she is recovering and felt well enough to bake but not deliver. So her daughter, Holly, rode to the Café on her scooter to deliver our orders. She sat with us and chatted for a while. Around 3 pm, Iliana went for a swim in our neighbour's pool (we don't have one) and I had a nap. Iliana returned to cook meatballs for dinner. No sign of rain all day but the temperature had fallen to 25°C in the shade by 5.30 pm. Sunday, July 10, 2022 We drove to Georgioupoli for Englisg breakfast at Stelios Café Bar. After I'd finished eating, I connected my iPad-Mini to WiFi to check the RT news. As I stared at the screen, my cousin's name popped up. WTF? I tapped on the green button and heard her voice via MS Messenger. "Hi, our cruise ship has just landed at Haniá. Sorry for the short notice but onboard WiFi is really expensive and I didn't have your phone number." We haven't seen each other in person for some 30 years so I wasn't going to miss this opportunity. I gave her my UK mobile number and asked her to ring me so I had her number. "OK, we're going to pay for breakfast then we'll drive to Haniá and call you in about an hour."
	We met up and spent a pleasant couple of hours together.
	Monday, July 11, 2022 Omelette at Café O Petros with Billy and Chris. DD apparently is at home with covid. As I rode home, Iliana drove past on her way to the "knit & natter" group in Kalyves.
Tuesday, July 12, 2022 I rode to the Café and sat with Billy. Chris had left a message that he'd gone to the airport. A German guy arrived on foot and sat near to us. He didn't speak a word of English so I translated for him. He told me that his family was renting a house around half a kilometre away. The family had gone to the beach, which didn't interest him, so he's decided to take a walk instead. They came from southern Germany.
	Wednesday, July 13, 2022 We drove to the chiropodist on the peninsula for our six-weekly maintenance. Afterwasrds we drove to Souda so that Iliana could buy knitting needles and wool. Then we crossed the road to the nearest Café, which looked small but turned out to have a huge menu selection. The waiter brought free starters of pitta bread with olive dip and tomato dip. Iliana hates olives so she got the tomato.
	I ordered an omelette. Iliana ordered a pasta meal. I put the remaining olive paste on my "Greek omelette", which contained olives.
	We asked for the bill and it arrived with jam-topped custard puddings and "rakomelo" (honey-flavoured raki). The bill for meals and drinks came to 18 Euros. No charge for the pitta bread, custard or raki!
Thursday, July 13, 2022 I'm uploading this early because today we are heading to the south coast of Crete for a couple of days' holiday - as if every day weren't a holiday anyway! But a change of scenery will be nice.

July 7, 2022 Call me an opportunist but the instant Boris resigned and the Pound-Euro exchange rate rose, I transfered some cash. It's an ill wind... July 8, 2022 The exchange rate went even higher - darn! __ Here, locally, I'm seeing a LOT of "fully vaxed" people stricken by (allegedly) the WuFlu. Way more than I saw during the early days of the alleged "pandemic", which affected mostly the elderly (including me). Notably, that was in winter whereas we are now at the height of summer with temperatures in the thirties. These people are describing worse symptoms that last longer than those I had back in January 2020. So much for "safe & effective". __ Last week my VPN stopped working. It would connect but I couldn't access the Internet while it was enabled. With help from the VPN provider, I eventually determined that my Greek ISP was blocking it. I set the VPN to "obfuscated" mode to fix it. Bastards.
