I propped myself up in bed because my stomach was full and slept till 2.30 am when I need the toilet. I lay awake for another hour before falling asleep till 8.30 am, by which time Iliana had taken a walk and brought the clothes in from the veranda.

Iliana wanted to go to Georgioupoli and I needed a walk so I set off in that direction and Iliana collected me in the car after half an hour.

On arrival at Georgioupoli, Iliana wanted to take a look around. The clouds had cleared, it was sunny and the tourists had gone. The place was deserted.

The only sign of life was the site of the new hotel, where workmen were building the foundations.

We returned to the square where the frame of the "Christmas Tree" had been erected. We had a late breakfast at Tito's Café, did some shopping and then drove home.

I got on my mobike and rode to Café O Petros to meet up with Chris, Billy, Mark, Brian & Karen. The latter announced that they've got a buyer for their house who has paid the deposit. They'll be returning to the UK for Christmas and will come back to complete the sale in April. That's disappointing but Karen is homesick and wants to be with her grandchildren.

When I arrived home, Iliana was cooking the liver and bacon, which she'd bought earlier. When it was cool, she boxed it in portions and put it in the freezer.

Iliana was up a dawn, washed a load of clothes, hung them out and them immediately brought them back indoors as she heard thunder!

At 9 am, just after the rain stopped, she drove off to Rethymno to meet up with Maria.

10 am the sun has appeared and the washing in the pergola is drying. It's now 21.5°C in there and 20° indoors.

I took a portion of liver out of the freezer for later and heated a portion of Bekri-Meze for my breakfast / early lunch.

I rode to the Café at noon and joined Billy, Ron, Karen & Brian. For some reason, the phone camera didn't focus.

I left the Café and rode to Vamos to get cash from the ATM.

Back home, I edited more book chapters.

Iliana sent me a photo of her newly painted nails.

She returned home at sunset, by which time I'd eaten the liver with unfrozen peas.

She said that the rain held off in Rethymno until she was about to leave.

It hadn't rained here while she was out but I could feel droplets so I wrapped the mobike. Obviously it's water resistant but the switches don't like rain.

It was dark enough to trigger the camera flash so you can see the reflectors glowing.

It was very wet and windy overnight. The good news is that no water leaked inside the pergola. You might remember that a few months ago I thought the tiled roof was leaking, or the balcony. But I found a hole (arrowed) where the fence had been removed to make room for the stairs. I filled it but it hasn't rained heavily since then - till now.

More good news is that the metal chimney used to creak, rattle and howl in strong winds but last night it was silent. It seems that the wooden mounting blocks and wall insulation have resulted in an unexpected benefit.

We drove to Plaka and ordered breakfast at Vangelis taverna. (I prefer my eggs well done.)

Back home, I rode to the Café in Litsarda for drinks with Billy, Ron and Chris. I'd planned to visit the ATM but forgot.

In the afternoon, I finished editing the latest book and emailed it to Jon at White Crow Publications.

I liana washed and hung out some sheets and then drove to the bank for a meeting to sort out some bureaucratic nonsense.

I phoned Billy to pass on a message from Pantelis the mechanic, who would collect Billy's car at 10 am.

I took a very short walk around the village. The temperature was 9°C and it felt bitterly cold when the wind blew.

I came across a new house being built.

Nearer home, Shkelqim and his mate were doing some construction work for our neighbours, Roger & Mandy.

Back home, I had hard-boiled eggs, beans and sauerkraut for breakfast, followed by a slice of German bread.

The White Mountains are finally living up to their name, with a fresh covering of snow.

As Billy is carless today, I drove to his house and took him to the Café.

Ron was already there with DD. Brian & Karen arrived. After two coffees, I drove to the bank to get cash and then returned to drive Billy home.

Iliana had got a lift to Kalyves for lunch with the "Knit & Natter" group. I heated up a portion of Bekri-Meze for a late lunch - early dinner at 3.30 pm.

I came downstairs to a flood. The freezer had apparently died overnight and defrosted. We mopped the floor and emptied the freezer contents into the big fridge-freezer, which had only just enough room.

Minutes later, Iliana noticed that the floor was flooding again! It turned out that I hadn't turned off the tap for the "water pistol" and it was dripping.

(Later I realised that this was the only leak and the freezer was fine.)

Iliana hung out the first lot of towels. We used to get a lot of rainwater coming under the kitchen door in winter. Now that I've modified the door and had the new tiled canopy installed, I'd hoped that we'd no longer need the old towels. Wishful thinking! Thank goodness for tiled floors.

It's extremely windy today with occasional showers. Some areas have no electricity as repairs are being carried out.

Iliana and I dressed warmly and took a walk. I called at the supermarket but the mail hadn't arrived yet.

I collected Billy in the car at noon and drove him to the Café. On the way back I date-stamped the mail.

At 4 pm I had my weekly Skype discussion.

At 5 pm, Maria texted to say that she was on the bus leaving Rethymno, so I set off in the car and met her at the bus stop. Back home, Iliana heated up dinner.

I felt the first signs of a cold coming on and packed my last two Ivermectin pills.

We had an early night and set off for the airport at 4 am for a 5-day stay in Munich as Iliana is desperate to visit the Christmas markets and shops.

We took an Aegean flight from Haniá to Athens and a connecting flight to Munich, where there was a light sprinkling of snow.

We couldn't make any sense of the ticket machines but we found a ticket office and bought a city tour card, which is valid for three days and up to five people.

I liana had contacted our friends in Munich some weeks ago to ask for a recommendation of a place to stay. They invited us to stay with them in their house.

For the sake of privacy, I'll call them Tom and Mary.

We took the train to East Munich station and then a bus the rest of the way. Our friend Tom met us at the bus stop and led us on foot to his house.

Having unpacked, we took the bus and train back to Marienplatz in the city centre to visit the Christmas market.

It was bitterly cold, so we had a Glühwein ("glow wine") each and a veal sausage roll.

We awoke to a sprinkling of snow. Maria braved the cold and stood outside to smoke a cigarette.

I took an Ivermectin pill in the hope of stopping or delaying my cold.

Snowing. We all walked to breakfast place for veal sausages that had to be peeled. Pretzels or roast potatoes. Mustard and honey sauce.

Walked to outdoor ice rink. Much to my surprise, I did two large circuits and one small, without falling over. It's over fifty years since last I skated!

Dinner at 4.30 pm. Got bus and train to city to food square. Viktualienmarkt

The snow keeps on falling.

I took my second Ivermectin pill. I'm feeling fine.

Tom and Mary took us to a different place for a traditional Bavarian breakfast.

Iliana, Maria and I took the bus and train back to the city centre to visit another Christmas market.

Back at the house, Mary served up Stollen with a selection of cheeses.

We had all been invited to a wedding at Hall in Austria, so we arose before dawn and piled ourselves and suitcases into the car.

Driving conditions were not good but Tom managed to get us safely to the Autobahn, where we joined a queue of slow-moving traffic.

The journey that normally takes two hours took almost four, including a fifteen minute stop at a service area.

We arrived in Hall with just ten minutes to spare and it took five minutes to trudge through the snow to the Register Office.

Outside the Town Hall was yet another Christmas Market, so we had to visit that before driving to our hotel.

The hotel room were huge and nicely appointed.

We adjourned to the dining room for meals and then dancing.

Germans and Austrians like their meat almost raw.

The dancing lasted until 2 am but I didn't.

The journey back to Munich was much easier as much of the snow had been cleared.

Tractors with snow-blower attachments were filling trucks.

We got occasional glimpses of the mountains.

Finally back in Munich, the car was put back in the underground garage, which has hydraulic lifts to pack the cars more densely.

We walked to a local Christmas market that was heaving with people.

Walking back to the house.

We went out for dinner in the evening.

Iliana spent an hour packing for the morning flight.

I'd been sniffling all night and wasn't feeling well. I was hoping that I'd be OK for the flight home.

Tom drove us to the railway station and we caught the train to the airport.

On arrival at the airport check-in area, we found a melée of angry people. Our flight had been cancelled! Apparently, because so many planes had been stranded, there was no room for incoming planes and if our plane from Athens couldn't arrive, it couldn't take us back!

We phoned Tom and told him the news. He told us to come back to the house.

We got back on the train (illegally, as our ticket had expired) and travelled to the East Munich station, where we bought another 3-day ticket.

Then we caught the bus back to Tom's house and unpacked.

Iliana phoned the Aegean office in Athens and rebooked our flight for Wednesday.

Iliana and Maria caught the bus and train back to the city centre to do more shopping.

I was feeling very rough and remained behind. Mary made me a snack.

Iliana and Maria went back to the city for yet more shopping and sightseeing.

I watched videos by my friend, Michael Dranfield, who still repairs TVs and other equipment.

At 3 pm I joined the Skype call with my engineer friends in the UK.

When Iliana and Maria returned, we all went out for evening dinner.

We were up at the crack of dawn and piled into Tom's car for the drive to the railway station.

Having checked in and got through security, we ordered snacks. As I put the tray onto the table, the back that was hanging over my shoulder swung round and scattered the drinks across the floor.

The Café staff were very helpful: they cleaned up the mess and gave us free replacement drinks.

At Athens airport we had a two hour wait for our flight to Haniá.

On arrival at Haniá, we collected our baggage ad then phoned the car park company to collect us, which they did promptly.

On the drive home we were all hungry, so we stopped at "Kalami parking" taverna to eat.

I couldn't eat all of my pork chop so I asked for "ena paketo" to take it home.

I had a rough night, as witnessed by the rubbish bin full of used tissues. I've spent over an hour compiling this brief holiday account but all I really want to do is to go back to bed. Thankfully, another batch of Ivermectin has just arrived from a very good friend so we'll see if it speeds up my recovery.

(I'm not looking for sympathy - just explaining why this blog is short and probably has typos!)

Iliana put a batch of clothes in the washing machine and hung them out to dry after half an hour. I thought she was being optimistic as the sky was overcast and rain forecast.

I had leftover pork chop from yesterday for breakfast.

After noon, Chris brought me a chunk of cheese, which I'd not been able to buy in the village. He pointed out that it was raining so he and I brought the damp washing indoors and Iliana hung it up.

I went to bed at 2 pm and remained there till 5.30 pm, when I woke and went downstairs to wash the dishes. I took another Ivermectin pill (6 mg). Iliana cooked liver and vegetables for dinner. I ate a small portion because I don't feel hungry.

You may recall that just before we left for Germany, we had a freezer disaster. I thought that the freezer had died but the water had actually come from the water pistol in the toilet room.

However, the freezer door kept popping open by itself at random intervals. I removed the plastic top to look at the hinge. When I removed the screws, it was obvious that it was misaligned.

I marked the holes with a pen, filed them out in the workshop and then replaced the hinge.

Now it was possible to tighten down all three screws without putting an opening force on the door.

I didn't announce our holiday plans in advance because I didn't want anyone to know that our house might be empty. I've even got Iliana trained not to mention it on Fakebook.
