I had eggs, tuna, sauerkraut and baked beans (rinsed) for breakfast at 7 am so that I could take the antibiotic early.

The car and motorbike were covered in condensation.

The sky was so full of dust or powder that it was impossible to see Rethymno across the bay.

I set off on my walk around 8 am. The rubbish collection lorry was doing its rounds.

I returned home without triggering a migraine attack. There's a thunderstorm forecast for this evening.

Update 11.30 am: the forecast thunderstorm has been cancelled.

As I headed for the Café at lunchtime, I noticed that our German neighbours had workers installing transparent roller blinds on their patio.

Four walkers stopped to say hello. Linda and Dave at the rear live in the village. Bob and Ann have written several booklets about walks on Crete. I was surprised to see them because I'd heard that they'd sold their house and left Crete. However, they told me that they are now renting a house here.

Back home after spending an hour with DD, Billy & Chris at the Café, I spent the rest of the day reading and researching.

I had a small breakfast, took antibiotic and set off for a walk at 8.30 am.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when the council has insufficient funds and/or workers, and people are too lazy to go to the next communal bin.

As I approached home, the sun was visible behind the haze. The weather was warm and windy.

Iliana had hung the washing out. This sheet got caught by the wind and wrapped itself around the adjacent line.

I rode to the Café just before noon. DD was there and complained that his wheelchair was broken. I'd done a previous repair with a hose clamp and a piece of bent aluminium to hold the chair together. The clamp had come loose so I unscrewed a side panel, fixed the clamp and screwed the panel back.

Chris arrived so we chatted for a while. I ordered a portion of Bekri-Meze to take home and Chris ordered two. Chris drove DD home with his wheelchair in the boot. I followed on my mobike and helped to unload it and wheeled DD down his driveway and into his house.

He showed me a potentiometer that his brother had bought to replace the broken speed control on his mobility scooter. It worked OK but the spindle was plastic and too small a diameter for the lever. Hopefully, the one that I ordered from Germany will arrive soon.

DD has also smashed the front of his mobility scooter, resulting in an indicator lamp dangling by its wires. This could be fixed with fibreglass.

I put clothes in the washing machine before I took my morning walk.

Renovation project.

Judging by the number of bottles, someone had a good time at this café last night!

The sun was still rising as I arrived home. Iliana set out on her walk and I picked her up on the way to Almyrida. We dropped off rubbish and recycling waste on the way.

Francoise Café was deserted when we arrived at 10 am. However, it filled quickly after we'd been served.

After breakfast I decided to visit Lake Ayiá so we drove along the National Road past Haniá and turned left towards Omalos.

Unfortunately, when we arrived at the lake, the Café car park was closed and cars were parked along the roadside. Clearly, a big event was taking place so we turned and headed back.

We stopped in Vamos at the Yoga Centre and animal food store yard.

Iliana wanted to visit the weekly tabletop sale to buy soap but Katerina, the lady who makes it, wasn't there.

Back home I got on my mobike and met Billy at the usual Café in Litsarda.

The rest of the day was uneventful.

A thunderstorm is approaching the island from the north west.

I had my breakfast at 7 am and set off on my walk.

I startled a flock of sheep, which were roaming the streets as usual.

In the village I saw a man in the Café and said brightly, in Greek, "looks like rain".

"No way," he replied. "Not today."

I dropped off food scraps with our German neighbours for their chickens. Menacing clouds obscured the sun to the east.

Iliana set off on her walk at 9 am after doing some cleaning. I washed the dishes and noted that it was growing darker outside. The sky is completely overcast apart from a couple of tiny blue patches.

With rain forecast, I drove to Kalyves in the car and walked to the microbiology centre to collect my blood- and urine test results. They were all clear. I don't have an infection or diabetes and my PSA was 0.25.

I walked to the doctor's surgery, waited five minutes to see him, and he told me to stop taking the antibiotics as obviously they aren't going to help.

He suggested that I see a proctologist if I'm still concerned; sounds like fun. I'll think about it.

By now it was really pissing down so I took off my socks and waded in my sandals to the plumber's shop, then the pharmacy, then the shop that sells seeds and natural products and finally to TOKO to buy sauerkraut.

Back home, I phoned Billy but he's not feeling well and doesn't want to go out today.

Around 6 pm just as it was growing dark, our electrical supply went off. I was in the office, which runs off the solar battery system, so I was unaffected but Iliana was eating her dinner. After I finished what I was doing, I went into the kitchen to investigate and found that the main breaker switch had flipped off. I switched it on and it remained on. I suspect that the heavy rain had caused an earth leakage current in an outside light but it's difficult to locate unless the fault remains.

Iliana wanted to freshen up some winter clothing for our forthcoming trip (tell you later) so I put them in the washing machine on the 15 minute program and then hung them out.

The day started out with clear sky. I didn't walk but I had another migraine episode - a flashing zigzag - that lasted twenty minutes. (It rarely causes a headache.) After that, we drove to the charity clothes shop in Nippos to look for winter clothing. We found a coat for Billy's wife (5 Euros) but nothing for me.

We drove to the centre of nearby Vrises and walked to "La Luna" Café for drinks and a snack. I had cheese and tomatoes. Iliana had a toasted sandwich.

We sat and watched the traffic chaos and then did some shopping in the nearest supermarket.

We arrived home just in time for me to get on my mobike and head for the Café in Litsarda, where Billy was waiting with Chris and DD. Brian & Karen arrived shortly after I did.

On the way home I stopped to date-stamp the weekly mail delivery, which included electricity bills. Ours was 182 Euros for two months. It just keeps increasing.

There was a package for me, which contained five DC-DC converters. Our under-cupboard LED strips are powered direct from my solar batteries, whose voltage can vary from 11 to 14 volts so I wanted to stabilise the supply at 11 volts. This is a cheap and easy way to achieve it.

At 4 pm I had my weekly Skype chat with my engineer friends. Cedric, who is severely disabled by MS, asked me to make him an LED pocket light for Christmas, so I set to work right away, using bits from my spares bins and a basic "joule thief" circuit.

I built it into a 2 x AA battery holder using only one battery cell, which left space for the electronic parts.

I awoke really early and put clothes in the washing machine at sunrise. After half an hour I hung them out and then set out for a walk.

The sky was blue apart from a grey haze on the horizon.

I packaged the LED torch, addressed it and rode to Vrises Post Office (the nearest) to send it to Cedric.

It's a 20 km round trip and the postage cost 7 Euros.

The return trip (different route) included this rather steep uphill climb but the mobike did it in 3rd gear without struggling.

Back home, Iliana had walked about a kilometre to visit a friend. I set about installing the water pistol, which my doctor insists that I use instead of toilet paper.

Billy phoned to say that his wife loved the 5 Euro coat but it was too small for her.

Under the sink, the cold water valve is connected to the sink mixer tap via a three-part extension and a flexible hose.

I shut the valve, disconnected the hose, unscrewed the top section of the extension and replaced it with a brass T-piece. I used PTFE tape on the brass threads.

I screwed a valve into the outlet of the T-piece and attached the pistol hose to that.

The plastic nut on the pistol connection dribbled so I reassembled it with a squirt of silicone rubber.

I finished just in time to meet Billy, Chris & DD at the Café.

At 2 pm I went to our German neighbours' house to collect a bottle of sheep's milk.

At 3 pm Iliana went to visit the neighbours and I went to bed for a nap. I slept soundly until I heard her crashing around in the kitchen.

The sky was mostly clear overnight, resulting in a cool start to the day and a chilly breeze from the north west. Iliana put in yet another load of washing!

A couple of days ago, I boiled some split peas with the intention of shoving them in a blender to make "fava". However, I decided that they were fine as they are. I put Ghee butter on a slice of German bread with split-pea stodge and a drizzle of olive oil. Yummy.

Iliana left for Rethymno at 9.30 and I fitted the pistol holder to the toilet wall.

It's sunny outside but only about 18°C. Time for a walk.

This grub was crossing the road in front of traffic so I gave it a helping push with my foot. It's probably going to metamorphose into something really destructive.

Mostly blue sky with clouds over the mountains and a grey cloud bank on the horizon towards the Greek mainland (photo below, left).

At lunchtime I rode to the Café and chatted to DD, Billy, his wife, Brian, Karen, Chris and his wife.

By 1 pm large clouds were obscuring the sun and I rode home to have a snack and then a bath.

Iliana set off for "Jumbo" in Haniá. Shortly afterwards, a lorry and excavator arrived to shift rocks from the storage area in front of our house.

I rode to the Café at lunchtime and was joined by Chris. Billy had gone to Haniá with a friend to sort out a repeat prescription for his wife's oxygen machine, which is on loan.

Iliana arrived home a minute after I did, while I was filling the mobike tank with petrol.

Shortly after we left home, the drizzle changed to pouring rain.

We drove to "Homais" store near Haniá to buy me a winter coat and Billy's wife some slippers.

After that we drove to the "Apollon" indoor car park near the centre of town.

The rain had stopped by the time we left the car park, so we did some shopping and then went upstairs in "Grigoris" Café to order drinks. I'd had two eggs and sauerkraut for breakfast and was feeling hungry, so I ordered a chicken wrap and Iliana ordered something else (I forget).

Two pigeons came in from the balcony but the floor was spotlessly clean and they soon left.

We paid and left, did a little shopping for fruit on the way back to the car park, and drove home.

In the afternoon, Iliana visited the neighbours and I had a two-hour nap.

The bedroom temperature fell to 17°C overnight. I dressed normally, went outside and then came back indoors to put my long-johns and boots on!

We drove to Almyrida for breakfast. As I approached the car park I realised that it was flooded so I reversed and parked near the recycling bins.

The southerly wind was blowing big waves towards the shore.

We walked to Francoise and ordered breakfast.

Back home, I drove to the Litsarda Café in the car to meet Billy and to deliver the slippers for his wife. Billy said that his son had bought him a used mobility scooter in Croydon and was shipping it here.

I drove DD and his wheelchair to his house.

In the afternoon, Iliana visited the neighbours and I had a hot bath.

As always, I did research in between times and I watched videos in the evening.

The nights are cold, now, so we've started to take a hot water bottle to bed!

A sunny day but chilly. Iliana did a white was and hung out the sheets and pillow cases before I got out of bed.

At lunchtime I rode to the Café and I was glad that I'd worn my pullover and padded jacket. I sat with DD who was having problems with his phone SIM card. I couldn't help.

Chris arrived, then Billy arrived with Mark the builder, who had been tidying Billy's garden.

In the afternoon, Iliana drove to Kalyves for her "Knit & Natter" group meeting. I watched you-tube videos while eating sausages and broccoli.

I took no photos today. I didn't go for a walk.

Jon Beecher of White Crow Publishing sent me a book via email to edit. I'll make a start on that tomorrow.

I rode to Georgioupoli to buy meat. Unfortunately, I arrived to find the butcher's shop staff sitting outside. "No electricity," a lady told me in Greek. "We can't open the freezers."

I rode to the sea front. Tourists, parasols, beach chairs all gone for the winter. It's sunny but chilly in the shade.

To my left, a new hotel is under construction.

On the ride home up "Seven Bends Road", I stopped to photograph the view.

I rode to the supermarket to date-stamp the mail and found a parcel addressed to me. It was the potentiometer from Germany that I ordered weeks ago for DD's mobility scooter. I rode to the Café to discover that DD had just left. So I rode to his house and collected the lever.

After my coffee with Billy, Chris & Mark, I rode home and took the parts into the workshop.

The first problem was that the original potentiometer had a 6.0 mm diameter spindle but the new one was 1/4 inch - about 6.38 mm. The nearest drill I could find was 6.5 mm so I used that to drill out the hole on the lever. I was then able to fit the potentiometer spindle into the lever and tighten the two grub screws with a hex Allen key. The Allen key is included in the photos.

The spring centralises the forward/reverse lever when it's released.

The lever had snapped at some point in its life and someone had fashioned a replacement out of steel strip and bound it with white electrician's tape. I removed part of this and fitted heat shrink tubing instead. So now it's ready for installing on the mobility scooter.

In the evening, I made a start on editing the book that Jon had sent yesterday.

Iliana woke with a snuffle and turned the oil-fired central heating on because she was shivering. I felt fine.

I ate two hard boiled eggs, baked beans and sauerkraut for breakfast and then took kitchen scraps to our German neighbours for their chickens and rabbits. We chatted about health and then I returned home with a fresh bottle of sheep's milk.

I took a walk around the village. It's very windy but not chilly today. I arrived home at 11.30.

I rode to the Café at noon and DD was just leaving in his niece's car. "The key's in the door", he mumbled. I rode to his house and opened the room where the mobility scooter is stored. I removed the screws holding the plastic cowl and fitted the new potentiometer.

Fitting the lever was very fiddly as there's a spring that returns it to the central position and everything had to be aligned correctly.

Finally, I was able to tighten the grub screws that hold the lever on the potentiometer spindle.

The spring seems to be weak or incorrectly positioned because it doesn't provide a positive centring for the lever as it ought to. But, as I didn't dismantle it in the first place, I'm not sure how, exactly, it's supposed to fit.

DD had smashed the front corner of the scooter, so much of the plastic was missing and the light unit was resting on the ground.

I added duct tape to secure the light temporarily.

Having tested that the scooter was working, I returned to the Café an left a message for DD, instructing him to get the bodywork repaired properly as the tape won't last long.

Chris's wife phoned him to ask him to buy some food bowls for the cats. So, on my way home, I detoured to the factory that manufactures ceramic yoghurt pots.

I was delayed by a traffic jam as the lady in the grey car had met a van in a narrow section and made several attempts to reverse out of its way. Finally, she managed it and we were able to pass.

At the ceramics factory, I asked two workers if I might take a couple of chipped bowls from the scrap pile. "Oh, no," said one man and beckoned me to follow him inside the factory where hundreds of new bowls were stacked. He handed me three. "Anything else," he asked (this was all in Greek of course).

"No, thanks. How much do I owe?" He shrugged and motioned me to leave. "If you need more, come back," his mate said in English.

I delivered the bowls to Chris who had left the Café and gone home.

In the evening, I edited a couple of book chapters and then watched videos. Iliana, meanwhile, drove to "The Library Taverna" near Billy's house to attend a quiz.

I awoke late. Iliana had already hung the washing out and gone for a walk. I had breakfast and then took my umbrella for a walk. It wasn't cold but the clouds looked threatening.

On my return I read emails and web pages before bringing the washing in. I wasn't a minute too soon. As I tried to decide whether to ride to the Café or drive, it started to rain.

As I left in the car, Iliana was hanging the still-damp clothes on the rack in the shelter of the roofed pergola.

At the Café I was told that DD had been and left on his mobility scooter. He was complaining that it was difficult to stop because the spring wasn't returning the lever to dead centre position. When I get a chance, I'll take another photo with torch illumination so that I can see what's happening.

I sat inside the Café with Chris and his wife. As they were leaving, they spotted Billy and Mark who had just arrived and were sitting outside. I carried my coffee across the road to join them and wiped off a wet chair to sit down.

I left the Café with another portion of "Bekri-Meze" (pork casserole) and a 1.5 litre bottle of local wine, as Iliana has polished off the last one.

When she went across the road to the neighbours' house, I had a bath.

At 6 pm we drove to Drapanos for evening dinner as I wanted lamb, which I haven't eaten for some time and was unable to buy.

At the next table was a group of people who were speaking German with an unusual accent. When we, and they, had finished eating, and Iliana had gone to the toilet, I asked the group (in German) where they were from. "We are from Austria." That was interesting to me for reasons which I'll explain in the next blog and we chatted until Iliana returned.

(For some reason it embarrasses her when I speak to strangers, uninvited, but they were extremely friendly and intrigued by the fact that I speak German.)

I propped myself up in bed because my stomach was full and slept till 2.30 am when I need the toilet. I lay awake for another hour before falling asleep till 8.30 am, by which time Iliana had taken a walk and brought the clothes in from the veranda.

Iliana wanted to go to Georgioupoli and I needed a walk so I set off in that direction and Iliana collected me in the car after half an hour.

On arrival at Georgioupoli, Iliana wanted to take a look around. The clouds had cleared, it was sunny and the tourists had gone. The place was deserted.

The only sign of life was the site of the new hotel, where workmen were building the foundations.

We returned to the square where the frame of the "Christmas Tree" had been erected. We had a late breakfast at Tito's Café, did some shopping and then drove home.

I got on my mobike and rode to Café O Petros to meet up with Chris, Billy, Mark, Brian & Karen. The latter announced that they've got a buyer for their house who has paid the deposit. They'll be returning to the UK for Christmas and will come back to complete the sale in April. That's disappointing but Karen is homesick and wants to be with her grandchildren.

Tommy Robinson left the cenotaph at around 11:30 am, an hour and a half before the pro-Palestinian march was scheduled to begin. He abandoned his supporters - some of whom have now been arrested and a sizeable number are now kettled in Parliament Square and are involved in scuffles with the police. This is exactly what the media wanted!

Every major tabloid newspaper is now running the headline that 'far right thugs' have clashed with the police at the cenotaph. There isn't a single pro-Palestinian protester at the cenotaph, and there was NEVER going to be. The whole thing was a set up so the media could capture pictures of young, drunk White lads in balaclavas and masks, waving England flags and scuffling with the police. Tommy Robinson's job is done and he is now heading home, leaving everyone else stuck in London. This debacle has been a gift to the police, the media and the government, who will now be able to place the blame for any trouble on the 'far right'. This is what a set up looks like &endash; and it is EXACTLY what people warned would happen."

Since YouTube implemented it's "Don't Use an Ad-blocker" policy, I find that each time I try to watch a video in "Brave" browser, this warning appears. I have to click the "Reload" icon to watch the video (clicking "Retry" doesn't work).

However, this is a small inconvenience compared with having to endure adverts.

When: Now if you upgrade your Outlook email App.

The new Microsoft Outlook, replacing Calendar and Mail in Windows 11, synchs user data, including credentials or emails, to Microsoft Cloud by default. This applies even when using Gmail and other third-party mail accounts unless specified otherwise.

Microsoft gets full access to mails, calendars and contacts!

"Microsoft steals access data."

But not only Windows users are at risk: Outlook versions for iOS, Mac and even Android are also affected, according to Heise.

New Outlook users risk having their IMAP and SMTP credentials and whole emails transferred to Microsoft servers without proper consent given, a report by heise.de found.

One crisp winter morning in Sweden, a cute little girl named Greta woke up to a perfect world, one where there were no petroleum products ruining the earth. She tossed aside her cotton sheet and wool blanket and stepped out onto a dirt floor covered with willow bark that had been pulverised with rocks. "What's this?" she asked.

"Pulverised willow bark," replied her fairy godmother.

"What happened to the carpet?" she asked.

"The carpet was nylon, which is made from butadiene and hydrogen cyanide, both made from petroleum," came the response.

Greta smiled, acknowledging that adjustments are necessary to save the planet, and moved to the sink to brush her teeth where instead of a toothbrush, she found a willow, mangled on one end to expose wood fibre bristles.

"Your old toothbrush?" noted her godmother, "Also nylon."

"Where's the water?" asked Greta.

"Down the road in the canal," replied her godmother, 'Just make sure you avoid water with cholera in it"

"Why's there no running water?" Greta asked, becoming a little peevish.

"Well," said her godmother, who happened to teach engineering at MIT, "Where do we begin?" There followed a long monologue about how sink valves need elastomer seats and how copper pipes contain copper, which has to be mined and how it's impossible to make all-electric earth-moving equipment with no gear lubrication or tires and how ore has to be smelted to a make metal, and that's tough to do with only electricity as a source of heat, and even if you use only electricity, the wires need insulation, which is petroleum-based, and though most of Sweden's energy is produced in an environmentally friendly way because of hydro and nuclear, if you do a mass and energy balance around the whole system, you still need lots of petroleum products like lubricants and nylon and rubber for tires and asphalt for filling potholes and wax and iPhone plastic and elastic to hold your underwear up while operating a copper smelting furnace and . . .

"What's for breakfast?" interjected Greta, whose head was hurting.

"Fresh, range-fed chicken eggs," replied her godmother. "Raw."

"How so, raw?" inquired Greta.

"Well, . . ." And once again, Greta was told about the need for petroleum products like transformer oil and scores of petroleum products essential for producing metals for frying pans and in the end was educated about how you can't have a petroleum-free world and then cook eggs. Unless you rip your front fence up and start a fire and carefully cook your egg in an orange peel like you do in Boy Scouts. Not that you can find oranges in Sweden anymore.

"But I want poached eggs like my Aunt Tilda makes," lamented Greta.

"Tilda died this morning," the godmother explained. "Bacterial pneumonia."

"What?!" interjected Greta. "No one dies of bacterial pneumonia! We have penicillin."

"Not anymore," explained godmother "The production of penicillin requires chemical extraction using isobutyl acetate, which, if you know your organic chemistry, is petroleum-based. Lots of people are dying, which is problematic because there's not any easy way of disposing of the bodies since back hoes need hydraulic oil and crematoriums can't really burn many bodies using as fuel Swedish fences and furniture, which are rapidly disappearing - being used on the black market for roasting eggs and staying warm."

This represents only a fraction of Greta's day; a day without microphones to exclaim into and a day without much food, and a day without carbon-fibre boats to sail in, but a day that will save the planet.

Tune in tomorrow when Greta needs a root canal and learns how Novocain is synthesized.

The email form incorporates a spam filter. If your message contains certain errors or key words, the server will ask you to correct or remove them, otherwise your message will be assumed to be junk mail and will not be sent.

And you can still contact me via the old SatCure site.

To avoid problems, if you want to send an essay, it's best to send me a very brief explanation. If I'm interested, I'll reply to you with a working email address. Sorry, I do not accept guest posts, submissions or advertising.

So, if you have more than a few words to write, give a brief explanation in the email form and ask for my email address. If I give you my email address please DO NOT send any attachments without prior permission from me. If you want me to read a web page, email me the link (but not in the email form). If you want me to have a document or image, email me the download link (but not in the email form).

Note: If you email me with a question and don't receive a reply, it's likely that YOU have an email problem. I ALWAYS reply to questions within a few minutes (or a few hours if I'm away from a Wi-Fi connection).

If you are using a so-called "free" email address, bear in mind that there's a cost.
Firstly, THEY are gathering information to "profile" you.
Secondly, it's probably not reliable.
Thirdly, if it's popular, it's a prime target for hacking. How much do you value your personal information?
Fourthly, if YOU don't control your own email server and if YOU don't archive every message on YOUR computer (with a reliable backup) then one day you are likely to lose every message and possibly your email account as well. There's always a penalty for "free".
